Spinal Fusion

Spinal fusion is a process used to fuse two or more vertebrae, which are the bones that make up the spinal column, with bone grafts and internal devices. The intention is that the diseased or injured sections of the spine will heal into a single solid bone. The surgery eliminates motion between the fused vertebral segments, which may be desirable when motion is the cause of significant pain. It also stops the progress of a spinal deformity such as scoliosis. A spinal fusion takes away some of the patient's spinal flexibility but in most cases is performed to eliminate preoperative pain. Most spinal fusions involve relatively small spinal segments and thus do not limit motion very much.

Please consult your primary care physician if you feel any irregular pain or discomfort while performing normal daily activities. Your regular physician can then evaluate and diagnose your condition. If necessary, your primary care physician can refer you to a qualified orthopedic surgeon who can treat your condition with the various types of treatment options available. For more information regarding spinal fusion, please consult your physician.
